Abita Springs adopts new planning and zoning code and official map

The Abita Springs Town Council voted Aug. 4 to adopt a comprehensive rewrite of the town planning and zoning code and to approve a new official zoning map, following public comment and a roll-call vote by the council.
Alderman Boudreaux urged the council to keep the zoning text amendable in the future, saying the council was voting "to create an a a new ... page law and then, the new zoning map" and that the "ordinance is intended to be updated and amended as the community needs and values change." Council members emphasized the years-long public process behind the rewrite and said the document will not be static.
Supporters on the dais noted the ordinance corrects many inconsistencies in older code sections and will allow future amendments. One council member said the effort has involved "numerous meetings" and more public input than previous documents, and that the update represents "a critical first step" toward simplifying the code for residents.
The council approved the ordinance following a motion to adopt as amended; the mayor then closed the public hearing. The ordinance, identified in the public hearing as Instrument No. 2026-07-01, now becomes the town's official code and zoning map to be further refined through future amendments and corrections.
