The Vernonia School District board voted unanimously May 1 to approve a three‑year superintendent contract for Darla White Larkin, effective July 1, 2026. The motion was moved, seconded and passed during the action items portion of the meeting.
Earlier in the meeting, the district announced the recommended hire of Abby Welter as the middle and high school counselor; the board approved that hire (one abstention was recorded). The superintendent also reported hiring Debbie Johnston as the district’s new maintenance director and supervisor, with a July 1 transition date; the board noted this hire would be processed without a separate contract motion that night.
Chair members indicated the contract will be signed after the meeting and that a press release would be issued. "We will be signing the contract after tonight’s meeting, and it’ll be official," the chair said.
The board recorded votes on each personnel motion in open session and will finalize onboarding paperwork with human resources prior to the July transition date.
