Shasta Union trustees prioritize college-and-career readiness in district goal-setting exercise

In a facilitated dot-prioritization exercise, the Board and Executive Cabinet placed highest emphasis on College and Career Readiness, while also discussing financial stability, attendance/engagement and cabinet leadership/succession planning as complementary focus areas.
Superintendent Owen Crosby introduced Dr. Ron Carruth of Educational Leadership Services to lead a goal-setting session in which trustees and cabinet members prioritized four draft focus areas. The group gave the most support to Focus Area 1: College and Career Readiness, which includes expanding access to college and career pathways, strengthening industry partnerships, and improving A-G completion and pathway certification rates.
The Board also discussed Focus Area 2 (financial stability and long-term fiscal planning), emphasizing balanced budgets, reserves and multi-year planning; Focus Area 3 (attendance, engagement and instructional systems) with goals to increase ADA and reduce chronic absenteeism via RTI and PLC work; and Focus Area 4 (cabinet leadership, alignment and succession planning). Trustees generally agreed all areas are important and asked for continued emphasis on attendance and succession planning.
