Parents and coach urge Shasta Union High to expand Foothill High wrestling room over safety, growth concerns

Sonja Merrill and several parents described overcrowding, limited gear storage and safety risks, and asked the Board to consider site visits or other immediate steps.
"The program has grown and had two state qualifiers this year," said Matt Owens, the new FHS head wrestling coach, according to the meeting minutes, which trustees received in written form. Taylor Brewer and multiple student speakers also described how limited floor space has constrained practices and equipment storage and urged the district to identify a larger facility. A parent who did not give a name said his son's confidence grew after switching to wrestling and asked the Board for support to sustain participation.
Board members heard the comments during the public comment period before the business agenda. While the minutes do not record a formal Board directive or vote tied directly to the wrestling-room requests, the public comments were registered for Board consideration as district staff proceed with capital planning, including projects funded by Measure M.
