Parents, students press board on Foothill High safety and transfer growth concerns

Parents and students used public comment at the May 12 Governing Board meeting to press the district for clearer communication and stronger safety measures following a recent incident at Foothill High School.
Kaarin Brooke, a board member from another district and parent of an FHS student, told trustees she was concerned about campus safety after a Friday incident that injured a student and said prior incidents and concerns had been communicated to administrators before the event. “Ms. Brooke urged the Board to prioritize student safety and consider the impacts of continued transfer growth on campuses and administration capacity,” the minutes note. Parent Shaun Vega Sanchez said the messaging around the FHS incident was vague and emphasized teaching students to use phones as tools; he also urged the Board not to forget the FHS wrestling program.
Student Board Members described the student response to the incident and called for inclusion rather than judgment of transfer students. Student Board Member Ava Wilson said students immediately sought adult help and described the occurrence as a "fast, isolated event," praising teacher response. The Board did not take formal action on safety policy at the meeting but trustees said they were reviewing policies and would continue work on related items.
