Board told district moved to free school AI platforms; staff to formalize guidance if board desires

When the board asked how subscriptions to artificial‑intelligence tools would be managed, the superintendent said an AI policy recommended by KASB was adopted earlier in the spring and the district directed staff and schools to favor free, secure education platforms. She said OpenAI offered a no‑cost education option for two years and that the district directed staff to use NotebookLM within the Google suite and other free vendor options rather than allow individual paid subscriptions to be charged to district accounts.
"At that time, we communicated out to everyone... this specific date, you can no longer charge these things to any district account," the superintendent said. She added that if the board wants formal written guidance beyond previous communications, staff will put it into policy.
Board members also asked about the budget impact of AI subscriptions; staff said if a specific curriculum requires a paid platform, that would be handled separately and not treated as a general district subscription charged to P‑cards.
