Board approves MOU changing 8th-grade schedule under trimester transition

The Kenyon-Wanamingo School District board approved a memorandum of understanding with the district teachers’ association that revises the 8th-grade teaching schedule in anticipation of a transition to a trimester system. Administration said the agreement reduces a distinct supervision period by embedding study-hall/work time within class and moves teachers to a six-period day consisting of five teaching periods and one planning period.
An administrator explained the change is expected to slightly affect substitute pay calculations: with teachers covering fewer supervision periods the district projected a modest net savings over current practice despite paying per-sub for coverage. The MOU followed several meetings with the association and was presented to the board with a recommendation to approve. Trustees approved the measure by voice vote; the clerk later recorded the motion as passing 7–0.
Board members thanked negotiators for their work. The administration said the agreement grew from discussions intended to improve scheduling efficiency during the trimester transition while maintaining planning time for teachers.
