District outlines ~$10 million plan to rebuild transportation yard; Modus responds to RFP
Summary
District staff reported Modus responded to the RFP for a bond-funded transportation yard that would demolish the existing undersized concrete bus barn and build a new facility with reconfigured circulation, relocated fueling, fencing and lighting. Estimated project cost is approximately $10 million; construction could start this summer with completion as early as February 2027.
District staff told the Board on March 10 that the existing transportation yard is undersized and the original concrete bus barn cannot fit newer buses, and that Modus Architects has responded to the RFP proposing full demolition and construction of a new transportation facility.
Associate Superintendent David Flores said planned improvements include new fencing, lighting, relocation of the fueling station and a reconfigured bus circulation pattern to improve traffic flow. "The project is estimated at approximately $10 million," Flores said, and Modus demonstrated understanding of the scope and interest in moving forward. The timeframe presented would start construction in the summer with potential completion by February 2027, though it could extend to June 2027.
Flores also noted a temporary plan to lease the Shasta County Office of Education's old facility on Highway 273 while construction occurs; fleet vehicles will be distributed across sites because the temporary site is too small for the entire fleet. The Board approved the Modus contract amendments as presented (RES.26-051).
