Council approves $1.004 million appropriation for new pumper engine to replace older unit

Council voted unanimously to appropriate $1,004,295 to the fleet maintenance/replacement fund and authorized the city manager to enter an agreement to purchase a 2027 Pierce Enforcer pumper engine from Atlantic Emergency Solutions of Manassas, Virginia.
Assistant Fire Chief Derek Mickler described the city’s fleet replacement strategy and said the financed purchase will replace a 2006 engine; the current 2016 model will go into reserve status. Chief Mickler said the vendor notified the city of a canceled order, offering an earlier delivery slot that could move the replacement forward to May of the following year if the council authorized appropriation now.
Council discussed station assignment and deployment; staff said the new pumper will be assigned to Station 8 on Eastwood Road and will provide coverage for the UNCW campus, Randall Parkway, South College Road and Market Street corridors. The ordinance and resolution were approved unanimously on first reading and the council waived second reading.
