Board advances large solar applications to ZBA amid public objections over farmland and screening

The Iroquois County Board and its Planning & Zoning committee spent significant time addressing large utility-scale solar applications that would be sited on farmable ground in multiple townships.

At the county board session members voted to deem the US Solar Satriales Loda application complete and forward it to the Zoning Board of Appeals; the vote was recorded by roll call. Planning & Zoning also moved the US Solar Venus application forward. During committee and public hearings residents repeatedly urged caution. As Mark Rust of Loda told the committee, "this council will be remembered as the one who sold out the future of Iroquois County for corporate greed," voicing concern that productive farmland and local agriculture would be harmed.

Planning & Zoning Administrator Julie Feller reported procedural updates and upcoming ZBA hearing dates for Louis Creek and other projects; the ZBA hearing on Louis Creek was rescheduled for Jan. 28 at 6:00 P.M. County officials repeatedly urged attendees to use the ZBA hearing process to register detailed objections or requests for specific contract terms, such as tree height or screening counts, because enforcement depends on written permit conditions.

The meeting reflects a split between statutory ordinance compliance and community concern: county staff and some board members noted that if an application meets state and county ordinance requirements it must be forwarded for ZBA consideration, while public commenters urged elected officials to push for stronger protections or seek recourse via state legislators.
