Marion council refers funding request for local snurfer documentary to Finance Committee

Shannon Naff, a PBS Appalachia representative, asked the Town Council on May 18 for municipal support for a documentary about the snurfer, a precursor to the modern snowboard that he said was manufactured in Marion. Naff presented two funding options for the town — $14,000 or $7,500 — and said grant funds already secured cover roughly half of the $60,000 production cost.
"This will be a $60,000 documentary project and some grant funds have been secured to cover approximately half of the costs," Naff said, describing plans to premiere the film at the Lincoln Theatre before broadcast. Council members asked procedural questions and, without debate, voted 8–0 to refer the request to the Finance Committee for detailed consideration (motion by Vice‑Mayor Dr. Jim Gates; second by Suzanne Jennings).
The referral means the Finance Committee will examine the town's options and recommend whether to allocate municipal funds and, if so, at what level. No appropriation was approved at the meeting; Council took only the referral action.
