Council approves land exchange to secure right-of-way for South Lake Story shared-use path

The Galesburg City Council adopted an ordinance authorizing the sale and conveyance of a portion of city-owned land adjacent to 1721 South Lake Story Road in an equal-acreage land swap to complete right-of-way needed for the South Lake Story shared-use path.
City Manager Hanson said the property owner previously conveyed about 0.25 acre of right-of-way to the city; the proposed ordinance authorizes transferring an equivalent 0.25 acre of city land to the owner to complete an equal exchange that will allow construction of the multi-use path. "This agreement allows the city to obtain the necessary right away for the shared use path while maintaining an equitable transaction with the property owner," Hanson said. Council moved the item to second reading and later adopted the ordinance (261005). Council members asked about county coordinating action for adjacent parcels; staff said they were waiting on county action.
Council members characterized the path as a long-awaited safety and recreation improvement. The vote to advance and to adopt the ordinance recorded six yes votes each time.
