Santa Clara launches Benton–Brokaw multimodal crossing feasibility study

City staff and consultants opened the first community workshop for a feasibility study exploring pedestrian, bicycle and possible vehicle connections across the rail corridor near Santa Clara Station. The yearlong study will develop conceptual alternatives, screen impacts and coordinate with regional partners.
Ajmal Puyegar, project manager with the City of Santa Clara Public Works Department, opened the first community meeting for the Benton–Brokaw multimodal crossing feasibility study and told participants the session was being recorded and would be posted on the project website.
John Cacciati, president of HMH Engineers, described the effort as an early-stage, grant-funded feasibility study to evaluate alternatives that would improve pedestrian, bicycle, transit and vehicle connectivity near the Santa Clara Station. “So I like to say we’re on day 0, if you will,” Cacciati said, underscoring that the team is seeking community input before developing conceptual designs.
The consultants said the study’s objectives are to close multimodal circulation gaps, improve station access and integrate with nearby projects such as the planned BART Phase 2 extension and the Santa Clara station area plan. The team told attendees it expects to produce recommended alternatives for presentation to advisory committees and City Council as the study advances.
