Speeding complaints, vehicle thefts and mutual aid noted by Jerome police
Summary
Residents raised speeding concerns on Maple; Police Chief Houston said the village is not eligible for a grant for extra officers and reported mutual aid assistance as well as three vehicle thefts (two with keys left in cars).
During public comment a resident asked whether the Village could install speed bumps, additional stop signs or temporarily close Maple to address vehicles "driving in excess of 35mph." The resident asked that their name be omitted from the record.
Dave Duvall asked, "is there a way we can ask for a grant for extra police for the accidents and speeding around the stoplights?" Chief Houston responded the Village would not qualify for a grant due to manpower and census limitations. Chief Houston also reported that Jerome officers are providing mutual aid to Leland Grove, Springfield and Sangamon County and reminded residents to call dispatch at 217-753-6666 for police response rather than calling the local police department directly.
Chief Houston said the Village had experienced three vehicle thefts recently and noted two involved keys left in vehicles; trustees and staff urged residents to lock cars and secure keys.
