The Galesburg City Council voted unanimously April 20 to adopt an ordinance reducing the maximum speed on South Lake Story Road from 45 miles per hour to 35 mph for a stretch beginning at Henderson Street and extending roughly 2,700 feet west.
City staff (Hansen) told the council the change aims to enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists using an adjacent path. Because the road is a county highway, staff said the county engineer and county board must first establish limits; the staff report indicated the corresponding county action took place on March 25, 2026, and the 35-mph signs are already in place. Council members discussed curve safety and the need for additional guardrail and monitoring, but expressed support and voted 7-0 to approve the ordinance on final reading.
Councilors asked staff to continue working with the county on signage and enforcement and to monitor speeds through the curve. The ordinance passed without amendment.
