Millington offers space for Shelby County to house adjudicated youth at a token rent

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Millington presented a memorandum on Oct. 1 to lease space that will be used to house adjudicated youth and to continue education and programming for that population.
Alicia Lindsey, chief administrative officer for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, said the lease is no‑cost to the county other than furniture and supplies, which the sheriff estimates at roughly $65,000 to be covered from the Sheriff’s operating budget. City Manager Frankie Daken said the arrangement is intended to help the county with overcrowding and to provide additional bed space: "This action will save the sheriff's office in the county, considerable resources and open up considerable bed space," he said.
Chief Jailer Kirk Fields said the space will allow the sheriff’s office to securely house and continue programming for adjudicated youth who must be kept sight and sound separate from adult populations; she said the department currently has seven adjudicated youth and projects three staff members per shift to oversee them. The lease was approved by committee with a favorable recommendation and will proceed to the full commission for final action.
