Durham board highlights $15.9M new funding for schools and staffing additions in adopted $1.4B budget

Commissioner Wendy Jacobs summarized elements of the adopted county budget during the Nov. 24 State of the County address and positioned budget choices as expressions of county values. Jacobs said the board’s budget added $15,930,000 in new funding for Durham Public Schools, bringing the county’s total contribution to $224,500,000. She also noted nearly $9,000,000 in annual pre‑K support and $12,600,000 for Durham Technical Community College.
Jacobs described operational choices embedded in the budget: a general hiring freeze with exceptions for priority areas, plus new positions—12 in emergency medical services to respond to rising call volume, five added to the sheriff’s office for coverage in the Research Triangle Park area, and 8.5 new positions associated with a new county youth home to expand programming and capacity. She cautioned that the county faces fiscal headwinds, including expiring American Rescue Plan Act funds and uncertain state and federal budgets, and said staff will continue strategic planning to address revenue pressures.
The Board voted earlier this year to adopt the budget unanimously; commissioners framed the funding increases as intentionally targeted to education, public safety and core services.
