Parks coalition urges Salinas to add maintenance staff as 67 acres transfer to city

Community groups told the Salinas City Council on Aug. 4 that staffing must keep pace with park acquisitions and expansions, urging the city to add maintenance positions before the new acreage transfers.
Representatives of a newly formed parks coalition requested a formal assessment of parks and recreation staffing and funding for two additional positions this fiscal year, including a senior park maintenance supervisor that staff had already identified as a priority. “Our coalition represents organizations that collectively serve thousands of residents every year,” said Lucina, speaking for the Salinas Parks and Recreation Coalition, who asked the city to conduct an assessment and fund staffing to maintain safe, welcoming public spaces.
Jennifer Vasquez, representing Fixer Land Trust and Friends of Ensign volunteers, told the council the city is scheduled to take ownership of 67 acres this September and invited council to a grand opening celebration on Sept. 20. “These 67 acres will be transferred to the city this September as head of the grand opening celebration on September 20,” she said. Several council members praised the interns’ small-business toolkit and asked staff to integrate the parks coalition’s recommendations into the budget process.
