Commissioners reviewed materials from a traffic study of the Route 66/87 intersection that presented two alternatives: a single-lane rotary or adding left-turn lanes on Route 66 in both directions. The study projects present red-level service at the intersection and warns congestion will worsen over the next 25 years if no improvements are made.
Chairman J. Riendeau said he generally supports rotaries for efficiency and safety but flagged concerns about property encroachment and physical constraints at the site. Nick Ferris said the rotary option, according to the plan, would fit within the existing road footprint while left-turn lanes likely require more land acquisition. Commissioner Nancy Hammarstrom said she initially favors left-turn lanes because of tractor-trailer traffic and available space concerns. Town Planner John Guszkowski said he, Town Administrator M. Walter, and First Selectman S. Everett will continue to work on proposals and the Commission will continue to monitor the project as it develops.
