"This is not technically a new ordinance... This is a revisioning, a major revamp of what we already have on the books," Chief Wilson said, noting that most technical rules for commercial construction (sprinklers, alarms, exit systems) remain governed by the state commission and cannot be superseded by the town. The draft contains grandfathering provisions so existing businesses are not required to retrofit immediately.
Chief Wilson said the town consulted an external reviewer who previously worked for IDHS and coordinated closely with the town attorney to avoid conflicts. Council members thanked him for the packet and asked to review the detailed ordinance; staff encouraged individual follow‑up conversations to address specific business concerns before the council takes further action.
