The council unanimously adopted Resolution 2025‑R24 to amend the town's self‑funded short‑term disability policy and add a limited paid family leave benefit. Staff said the amended policy provides two weeks of paid family leave in defined situations and that the short‑term disability policy runs concurrent with federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations where applicable.
"The town provides a self funded short term disability policy for eligible employees. The policy and its benefits run concurrent with the Family Medical Leave Act or FMLA," staff explained during the presentation. Council members asked whether the change "brings us up to code" with the federal FMLA; staff reiterated the town cannot change FMLA requirements and that the local short‑term disability benefit is a separate, town‑level program. The council voted to approve the resolution.
Staff said the policy language and the specific eligibility conditions are detailed in the human resources packet available from the HR department; councilors asked for confirmation that the local policy aligns operationally with federal requirements.
