Jess Banks Wright, director of community partnerships and initiatives, said ELITE began its school year on Aug. 4 and that several reporting items remain past due, including bank statements, cash-flow documents and proof of insurance. When Trustee Lavelle asked about a CDE letter referenced in the snapshot that outlined findings and required corrective documentation within three weeks, a SCOE staff speaker reported that the finding is tied to approximately $500,000 and that the charter operator had engaged counsel and was awaiting a response from the California Department of Education.
SCOE staff described the charter operator as attempting to seek a waiver from CDE; staff said they had not yet received an update from CDE. The matter was presented to trustees as an oversight update; no board action was recorded at the meeting.
The staff remarks that the finding "is around $500,000 tied to these findings" were provided in the oversight conversation and staff described the status as a waiting pattern while the charter's counsel communicates with CDE.
