A local small-scale developer described his purchase and planned rehabilitation of the Gottlieb Schlegel bakery building at 229 South Main Street, telling the BID board he took ownership on June 1 and has already completed tuckpointing and expects window deliveries soon. He listed planned exterior work: parapet flashing, restoration of decorative 'dental' trim pieces and painting wherever 'painted lady' trim needs attention.
The developer said he intends to pursue historic-register recognition and is seeking tenants once construction is underway. "So as of June 1, I own the building over at 229 South Main Street," he said, adding he has renovated historic properties in Milwaukee and plans to apply similar approaches here. Board members thanked him for undertaking the work and offered to help with connections to city staff and tenants.
