Select Board member urges patience on operating override timing amid $3.4M projected shortfall

David Martin of High Street, speaking as a Select Board member during the citizen comment period, told the finance committee that it is not obvious an operating override is needed this year and urged caution about premature discussion of timing. Martin said the town should give staff (ALG) a chance to present options to close an estimated $3.4 million shortfall and reminded the committee that Acton closed an approximately $4.3 million shortfall the previous year without resorting to an override.
Martin also cautioned that the LG model can overestimate multi‑year shortfalls and urged the committee to consider debt load, future budget pressures, and to review staff proposals in full before concluding an override is necessary. The committee thanked Martin for his comment and continuing engagement.
"It's certainly not obvious that we need an operating override this year," Martin said, adding that residents and school stakeholders were not broadly advocating for one at present.
