Council amends extension of Charter Review Committee to Dec. 31, 2027

Mayor Sharif and council members debated the proper timeline for the Charter Review Committee before amending the staff recommendation. Assistant City Manager Tamara Benz told the council the committee had met from April through Aug. 3 and presented about 10 pages of recommendations, but the committee requested more time for public input. "The charter committee met from April of this year until yesterday on August 3," Benz said, noting the group asked to be extended so it could complete outreach.
City Attorney Young advised the council that last-minute ballot placements would require additional special meetings and rapid preparation of staff reports and ballot language, and that rushing could be impractical. After discussion about meeting cadence and staffing, a motion to amend the extension from Dec. 31, 2028 to Dec. 31, 2027 was moved, seconded, and approved by roll call; the clerk recorded affirmative votes and the motion carried. No ordinance or ballot language was placed on the ballot as part of this action; the amendment simply extended the committee’s statutory term and scope for further work.
