SWTA negotiator says 2% pay offer falls short as lease revenue is cited

Tiffany Baides, chief negotiator for the South Whittier Teachers Association, used the public comment period at the May 19 board meeting to press the district for a larger pay increase during current contract negotiations. She said the district had offered "2% on schedule and a 1.25% one-time off schedule payment," and called that insufficient for teachers facing rising costs.
Baides further said the district receives revenue from a long-term lease, stating that "the district receives $30k a month from a 99-year lease of Carmela's land. This is a $360k a year amount that is being made inaccessible for teacher raises." She urged the district to increase its bargaining proposal at the next negotiation session.
The district met in closed session earlier to discuss labor negotiations with the South Whittier Teachers Association and California School Employees Association; Government Codes Section 3549.1 and 54957.6 were cited for the closed-session authority. Board members did not debate the specifics of the bargaining offer during open session, and no action on negotiations was announced when the superintendent reported back that closed session produced "no action."
