Superintendent highlights Pirate Academic Center: 195 visits, $24K semester budget

Superintendent Kim told the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School District board the Pirate Academic Center is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 7:00 and has had 195 student visits since it began in late October.
Kim said 42% of visitors were freshmen, 38% juniors and 20% sophomores, and described why students use the center: "26.2% came for homework help," 9.7% specifically for tutoring, 14% for study groups, 27% to study, 7.2% to make up missed quizzes or tests and 15.4% because they needed "a safe place to be" before being picked up. The superintendent added that about 120 of the visits were for snacks, showing a practical need for on-site provisions.
The district shared a projected second-semester base cost of $24,265—roughly $25,000 per semester—based on continuing the current tutor staffing. "The tutors are teachers. They make $50 an hour," Kim said, and staff estimated a daily average cost of about $475 across 54 service days in the second semester. Board members asked how students sign up; Kim said the district posts a calendar showing which tutors will attend and teachers announce schedules in class.
The presentation also included an invitation for the public to meet five WASC accreditation visitors during a March 2 reception and emphasized the center's role supporting students who lack transportation or need after-school supervision.
