Daniels County commissioners voted on Dec. 16 to advertise a part‑time tobacco education specialist position funded through the county's chronic disease task order.
County staff said the role will be 10 hours per week and tied to deliverables under a state award; once deliverables are met the specialist may help on other chronic disease work. "Now it's, I mean, you just go talk about smoking. Nowadays, it's more vaping and there's other things there," a county health official said in explaining the shift in focus. Commissioners moved and seconded the measure and the motion carried with no opposition.
Commissioners asked staff to include the position in the public notice box and the newspaper for the required five‑day posting. Staff requested that the board provide a short budget outline so the county can set up accounting lines once the money becomes active in January. The board also discussed training a backup staff member and running the position initially as a contracted 10‑hour slot shared with adjacent counties if recruitment is slow.
