South Whittier Board appoints Dr. Greg Gero as superintendent, approves three‑year contract

The South Whittier School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved an employment agreement appointing Dr. Greg Gero as district superintendent effective July 1, 2026.

Board President Dr. Natalia Barajas read the Brown Act summary of the contract before the vote, saying the agreement "is for a three‑year term commencing on July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2029. The Superintendent shall receive a salary of $251,907 and shall receive stipends and health and welfare benefits provided to certificated administrators and a life insurance plan with a value of $150,000." Trustees Jan Baird and Elias Alvarado made and seconded the motion; the vote was recorded as all yes.

Dr. Gero addressed the board and community after the appointment. He introduced his wife and daughter and said he was drawn to South Whittier "due to its strong sense of pride and the commitment to students that is evident across the district," adding, "This community cares deeply about creating success for every student." He said he looks forward to listening, visiting schools, meeting staff and families, and supporting instruction.

The board took the action as part of a broader consent to personnel and governance items during the June 16 meeting. No dissent or amendment to the contract terms was recorded in the public meeting minutes. The district listed the effective appointment date and the contract term in the public Brown Act disclosure provided to the board prior to the vote.
