District to open Pirate Academic Center Oct. 29; board recognizes students and teachers

Superintendent Kim told the board the district’s Pirate Academic Center will have a soft opening the week of Oct. 29 and will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 7 p.m. in the library. The center will offer tutoring, English‑learner support, homework help, assessment monitoring for makeup tests and assistance for dual‑enrollment students; one counselor will oversee the program each night.
Kim thanked the Pirate Education Foundation and the Gainey Family Foundation for donations supporting the center and teacher classroom grants. Board members praised the initiative as a safe after‑school option and discussed plans to highlight academic recognition at future school rallies.
The board also recognized teacher Kylan Bray for a special‑education award and four students: Lucas Malloy (Elks Club student of the month; concurrent enrollment and flight training noted), Jonah Alvarado (flight‑training milestones), Addison West (Edward Jones student of the month; 4.0 GPA) and Kate Wade (National Merit commended student). The superintendent encouraged more students to take the PSAT (Oct. 23) and noted how PSAT participation connects to National Merit consideration.
