County launches Bus Rapid Transit vision study to prioritize corridors for high‑capacity bus service

Durham County transportation staff and consultants on Nov. 3 presented a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vision study to identify corridors where high‑quality, frequent bus service would be most competitive and deliverable. The study will evaluate a “universe” of corridors (local and regional), apply goals and technical criteria (access, connectivity, convenience, deliverability), and run multi‑phase public and stakeholder engagement to produce a prioritized list for the county’s capital improvement plan.

Consultant Mary Kate Marukian described BRT as an enhanced bus service with high‑quality stations, frequent service and, where feasible, dedicated lanes and signal priority. She noted the Central Durham corridor — Route 3 to the Village via downtown — already has the highest ridership and will be evaluated alongside other local and regional corridors. The consultant said deliverability, including right‑of‑way needs and competitive federal funding potential, will be a major criterion as the team creates rough cost estimates and operating plans. Public workshops, pop‑ups and a stakeholder advisory committee will guide corridor refinement over the coming months.
