RTP 3.0 proposal seeks UC‑3 rezoning of most Research Triangle Park to allow mixed‑use nodes

Travis Creighton (vice‑president for planning, Research Triangle Foundation) and Robin Schultz (principal planner) emphasized this is a rezoning only — not a development plan — and that individual projects would proceed through standard site plan reviews. Schultz said the district remains subject to Article 8 environmental standards when projects come forward and that Foundation landowners have voluntarily committed to additional canopy goals; she told the board: “They will have to meet every part of Article 8.” Commissioners noted the district would take effect Jan. 1, 2026 if adopted and discussed coordination with the county’s UDO rewrite.
