Safety concerns about motorized bikes on sidewalks and helmet use drew attention at the April 13 Avon City Council meeting. Mayor Bryan Jensen asked the Safety Committee to meet Monday, April 20, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. to consider helmet requirements and possible enforcement options.
Jensen said many riders "are not wearing helmets and some are using inadequate children's bike helmets for high-speed vehicles reaching 30–35 mph," and asked staff to widely advertise the upcoming committee meeting. Council Member Michelle Patton, chair of the Safety Committee, agreed to the date and emphasized broad advertisement.
During public comment, resident Lauri Mathie said she appreciated Council and Commission attention to nearby Grace Estates concerns and described safety risks from motorized bikes near the former Martin's Deli. Mathie said children were "as young as her waist height traveling 30 mph on e-bikes on sidewalks," and asked for urgent action. Council directed that the Safety Committee meeting be broadly advertised and invited resident participation.
