Animal Shelter advisory board seeks modest outreach funding; council questions conference attendance

Sue Hartson, chair of the Animal Shelter Advisory Board, presented a compact FY27 request aimed at boosting adoption and public education. She described recent community outreach (Rowlett Rides event) and requested funds for brochures, backdrop/props for adoption events and $300 to send a board member to a Pets Alive conference in Allen, Texas.
Councilmembers praised the board’s work, asked about registration and travel costs, and one councilmember proposed increasing the training allocation so multiple board members could attend and then train staff and volunteers. Staff noted unused FY26 balances do not carry forward, so council suggested increasing the line if they wished to send more participants. The council did not act on the request tonight; the item will be included in the proposed budget for final consideration.
