Conservancy seeks permission to explore irrigation and 'sponge city' options for the green

The Village Conservancy asked the Select Board on Aug. 4 for authorization to consult regional and state entities about infrastructure work on the green, including irrigation systems and so‑called "sponge city" stormwater measures to improve resiliency.
Conservancy presenter Wendy described two infrastructure approaches: tapping town water to install irrigation piping or creating passive cistern systems to capture rainwater for dry periods. She said the idea also opens opportunities to treat portions of the town’s impermeable surfaces to reduce runoff and mitigate flooding. “We have been exploring this idea, as for the green,” she said, and asked permission to speak with the regional commission and VTrans because VTrans controls major arterial surfaces in the village.
Board members repeatedly emphasized that information‑gathering is distinct from execution: the Conservancy may help write grant applications but would expect the town to be the applicant and would not proceed on a large public scale without board approval. The board asked the Conservancy to return with research on maintenance impacts and costs before any policy or funding decisions.
