Conservancy proposes volunteer 'Conservancy Corps' to help maintain town parks

The Village Conservancy asked the Woodstock Select Board on Aug. 4 for permission to consult with town staff about a volunteer maintenance program the group called the “Conservancy Corps,” intended to run between April and October and to operate in coordination with the Department of Public Works.
Conservancy representative Wendy said the program would recruit volunteers through listservs, the paper and signup forms and would focus on enhancement work — pruning, mulching and other tasks — while leaving core DPW responsibilities to town staff. “We definitely do not wanna take their job away,” Wendy said. She asked the board’s permission to speak with DPW director Greg Fullerton to determine baseline services, liability and whether equipment or pickup of yard waste could be arranged.
Board members welcomed volunteer involvement but cautioned about boundaries: one member said the arrangement could feel like the Conservancy was "taking over the parks" and urged clear rules so volunteers do not supplant municipal services. Wendy said the Conservancy plans to return with concrete proposals and would not proceed with public actions or grant applications without board approval. The board asked staff to help coordinate follow‑up and indicated it would consider the Conservancy’s requests at a future meeting.
