Rutherford swears in Sean Farrell as new police chief

Sean Farrell was sworn in as Rutherford's 11th police chief at the borough council meeting on Aug. 3, 2026, following a council motion and roll-call approval.
"I, Sean Farrell, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully, impartially and justly perform all the duties of chief of police," Farrell said during his oath and, afterward, thanked former Chief John Russo and his family for support. Farrell described growing up in Rutherford and said being named chief is "truly an honor" and a responsibility he does not take lightly.
Mayor Nunziato asked the council to approve the appointment; the council president moved and Councilman Guzman seconded the motion, which passed on a roll call with affirmative votes from members present. Later in the meeting the council passed resolution No. 167 to authorize an employment contract for Chief Farrell.
In his remarks Farrell thanked colleagues and family, described a policing philosophy that emphasizes trust and service, and described plans to continue partnerships with neighboring agencies. "You can be confident that when you call upon us for service, you are going to get answered by some of the best officers," he said.
The council concluded the ceremonial portion with photographs and moved on to the regular agenda. No substantive policy actions tied to the chief's role were taken at the meeting beyond the employment contract vote.
