Board adopts revised student conduct policy (5S-100) on first and final reading

Ben Onofrio presented revisions to policy 5S-100, saying the updates implement elements of a model policy issued by the Utah State Board of Education and recent legislative changes.
"2 years ago, legislation required schools to create a bullying action plan in response to a confirmed instance of bullying. USBE has now finally put that model policy out, and we are implementing the best parts of that," Onofrio told the board. The presentation noted additions including supportive measures, consequences, parent notification, a limited appeal process and clarifications on court referrals for drug violations and safety interventions for special-education students.
Ms. Powell moved to approve 5S-100 on first and final reading; Ms. Price seconded. The board approved the policy by voice vote. The board recorded no amendments at the meeting. Onofrio said the policy had been vetted in the policy committee before coming to the full board.
