Parkland girls wrestlers urge board to reinstate coach, deliver letters of support

A delegation of Parkland girls wrestlers and recent alumni addressed the board during public comment to urge the district to retain coach Shave. Students described tournament results, season records and the coach’s work with new athletes, and they said they had gathered written support from teammates and parents.
Peyton Ocasio, speaking for current team members, said the team had 13 in the varsity lineup this season and that coach Shave was central to their success: "Our coach last year got coach of the year as we had an undefeated season... we need him on this team." Several other students, including Natalie Deutsch and Angelina Bachman, told the board the coach’s approach — patience, technical instruction and year-round availability — improved individual performance and morale. A former student volunteer, Kelsey Gelb, said she had returned as a volunteer coach because of his impact.
Board members thanked speakers for their remarks but reminded the audience that personnel matters are generally handled in executive session and cannot be discussed publicly. The board asked commenters to submit written material for the record and said it would accept the comments as public testimony.
