Jason Jongeward, a contractor who said he moved to Ely within the past year, used the public-comment period at the March 19 meeting of the White Pine County Regional Planning Commission to describe plans to buy and rehabilitate an older Main Street building in McGill.
"He was looking to purchase an older building on Main Street that is zoned commercial. It is #15 Fourth Street in McGill," Jongeward said, adding that he and his wife previously purchased the former bakery at 41 Fourth Street and had that property rezoned from C-2 to M-H-3. Jongeward said he has noticed a need for affordable housing in the area and asked whether a combined commercial/residential zoning could be created so owners would not repeatedly apply for rezoning when converting properties.
Commissioners and staff acknowledged the issue during the agenda-item discussion that followed, noting blocks zoned commercial that are used as homes and identifying possible actions such as drafting a mixed-use ordinance or reclassifying some parcels to residential zones.
