Lake Alfred sets tentative millage at 6.8502; budget hearing Sept. 10

The Lake Alfred City Commission on July 20 set a tentative millage rate of 6.8502 for fiscal year 2026–2027 and scheduled the first public budget hearing for 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10, at City Hall.
City Manager Ryan Leavengood presented the staff analysis and described the proposed millage as the calculated rollback rate. "The proposed millage for FY 26/27 is 6.8502 which is the calculated rollback rate (to collect the same amount of revenue from the previous properties from the previous year). This is a 1.46% decrease over the existing rate of 6.750," the manager said. He and staff noted the millage ceiling can be lowered at final adoption but not increased beyond the limit set by the resolution.
Commissioners discussed whether the commission would be able to maintain the current 6.750 rate at final adoption; staff said several revenue and expenditure variables remain unresolved. Commissioner Jack Dearmin moved to approve Resolution 06-26 setting the millage ceiling and the Sept. 10 hearing date; Commissioner Brent Eden seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
What happens next: staff will continue budget development and return to the commission for the public hearings in September, when the commission may adopt a final millage rate at or below the 6.8502 ceiling.
