Council advances plan to consign surplus vehicles to Royal Auction Group

Asst. Public Service Director Mike Testa told Council the city is testing a consignment auction with the Royal Auction Group to try to get higher returns on surplus vehicles and equipment. He said the company has a national network of websites and that the seller receives the full winning bid while a buyer-paid surcharge covers the auction agent’s fee. "They led us to believe that because of their national exposure that they could receive higher prices at auction than what they would normally receive on their own efforts," Testa said.
Council members discussed timing and whether to suspend rules to expedite the legislation. Council Member Tom Stugmyer, who raised the topic in Public Service, and Service Director Matt Hiscock said staff will evaluate results from an initial run and, if promising, broaden the June auction ordinance to permit consignment sales for higher-ticket items. No formal vote on the resolution’s final passage was recorded at the Committee meeting; the Clerk assigned Resolution No. 26-03 for readings.
