The Somerville City Council on Aug. 28 voted unanimously to establish a sister‑city relationship with Pryluky, Ukraine, citing cultural exchange, mutual support and solidarity amid wartime hardship.
Councilor Mbah, who introduced the resolution, said the relationship would "strengthen people‑to‑people connections, create opportunities for cultural, educational and economic exchange, and reaffirm the values of solidarity and cooperation." Mayor Olga Popenco of Pryluky joined the meeting online and described her city’s long history, cultural institutions and the toll of ongoing conflict: "Today, Ukraine is going through the most extremely difficult period in its history. We are fighting for our very right to exist as a free democratic state," Popenco said.
Mayor Ballantyne responded that Somerville stands in support: "I have no doubt that this partnership will strengthen our shared commitment to lasting and just peace for all," she said. Councilors discussed sending the resolution to committee for next steps to formalize exchanges and thanked Pryluky’s delegation for joining the meeting remotely.
