The Somerville City Council presented a formal citation Aug. 28 recognizing ISD health inspector Stephanie Estrella for her actions at a July 6 triple‑decker fire on Wheatland Street that displaced 27 tenants.
Councilor Clayton, who said he and another councilor were on the scene, described Estrella’s role in organizing residents away from danger, collecting critical information and coordinating with emergency partners. "At this critical moment, health inspector Stephanie Estrella arrived on the scene and quickly took charge of victim coordination," Clayton said. Mayor Ballantyne and other councilors joined in thanking Estrella for what they called clear, professional leadership.
Estrella, representing the city’s inspectional services/health functions, told the council ISD has services to assist residents with multilingual needs and works with Red Cross and other partners to find housing and referrals after emergencies. The council entered the citation into the record and acknowledged the city administration will follow up on procedural issues raised during the discussion about on‑scene city representation.
