District staff presented a package of proposed updates to board policies and administrative regulations to align with recent legislation and California Department of Education guidance.
Ashley Benjamin, director of curriculum and instruction, summarized changes across several policy areas: a new screening requirement for K–2 reading difficulties tied to Senate Bill 114 and the district’s adopted assessment; expanded language in comprehensive health education including parent/guardian notification and opt‑out provisions; added language in instructional‑materials and library policies to reflect state requirements on diversity and the Williams Act; and movement of a reclassification and monitoring section for English learners from the AR into policy to reflect statutory obligations. Benjamin said the reading screener window is occurring Oct. 6–31 and reports will be returned to parents.
Board members asked clarifying questions about specific language (for example, whether materials would include the Declaration of Independence "where appropriate" in social studies texts) and confirmed the updates are based on CSBA recommendations and state law. Policies and ARs were scheduled to return to the board Oct. 23 for action.
