The board approved a staff recommendation to name the former John Muir/SMASH campus on Ocean Park Boulevard the Ocean Park Schoolhouse.
Dr. Richardson presented the engagement process and a ranked survey of 172 participants, noting 97 respondents marked "Ocean Park Schoolhouse" as their most preferred option. "There was a strong consensus on the Ocean Park Schoolhouse," Richardson said, and staff outlined next steps including notifying the California Department of Education and scheduling mascot and color engagement later in the calendar year; the official name change would occur July 1, 2026 to align with state processes.
Board members discussed neighborhood identity and continuity with SMASH, and the motion to approve the name was moved and seconded and passed by roll call. Trustee Richard offered a post‑vote comment encouraging the community to consider honoring a woman in future naming steps.
