Board hears strategic-plan pitch calling for stronger tier-1 instruction and upgraded school safety

The McDowell County Schools board heard a presentation on the district review and strategic plan that centers on three goals: academic excellence, boosting student attendance and expanding school safety measures.
"So as a board of education, we have 3 goals. Our 1st 1 is academic excellence, And that's to increase reading mathematics," the presenter said, framing academic gains as the central objective and linking them to stronger Tier 1 instruction and targeted intervention. The presenter described model lessons, embedded coaching and peer walkthroughs as the core tactics to improve classroom instruction and reduce the number of students who require remedial support.
Board members pressed for details on attendance work and safety investments. The district described a multi-pronged approach to chronic absenteeism that includes WIN intervention time, wraparound services and home/porch visits. On safety, the presenter said the district has added weapon-detection measures, done a training with a safety analyst and is working on camera upgrades and access-control improvements.
"We just completed a training with doctor Steve Webb. He's a, safety analyst...we will have Mr. Webb back on September 23," the presenter said, explaining the district will continue targeted safety training and exercise reviews. The board did not take a formal vote on the plan during this meeting but asked staff to return with follow-up materials and implementation timelines.
