The Santa Monica‑Malibu Unified School District board opened its Nov. 20 meeting by disclosing a closed‑session settlement the district labeled DN1007. "The district agrees to reimburse parents for privately obtained educational expenses in the amount not to exceed $39,939, and the district shall pay reasonable attorney fees not to exceed $7,000," the superintendent read during open session.
Board President Jen Smith said the settlement and an easement and license tied to a solar system purchase agreement were discussed in closed session and would appear later on the consent calendar. Board members said the closed‑session motion had been made by Maria and seconded by Stacy; the report stated the closed‑session vote was 7 yes, no noes, and no abstentions.
After the disclosure the board moved the consent calendar with a late addition (G3x II) and a pulled item (5‑3). Richard moved to approve the agenda changes; Maria seconded. Roll call on the consent motion was unanimous. No additional details about the underlying dispute covered by DN1007 were provided in open session.
