Sheridan County commissioners reviewed requests for general purpose excise tax (GPET) funds for fiscal year 2026‑27 and approved a package of grants and capital allocations on May 5 after line‑by‑line votes.
Administrative Director Cameron Duff told the board that staff conservatively estimated revenue at about $3,000,000 (including roughly $48,000 in anticipated interest) and that total requests exceeded available funds by about $228,500. After discussion and amendments the board approved major allocations: $400,000 for patrol vehicles, $170,000 for emergency services, $160,000 for juvenile justice, $154,000 for rural fire districts, $425,000 for roads and bridge capital equipment and $200,000 for airport capital projects. The board also reduced and adjusted several nonprofit requests and ultimately moved $40,500 into contingency to cover obligations and unknowns.
Commissioners debated prioritization, with some urging more support for essential services such as road maintenance and fire districts. The board was reminded of an August obligation that will require a $200,000 ambulance payment and staff recommended addressing that out of current year GPET money to offset next year's budget. Several applicants attended the meeting and answered commissioners' questions about operations and funding sources.
