Fire chief flags possible future sprinkler mandate for marijuana facilities

The town's fire representative told the Planning Board that a proposed update to NFPA standards for marijuana or similar facilities could require sprinklers, a change that would impose significant additional costs if later applied to existing operations. The fire representative said the requirement was not in force now but encouraged the applicant to be aware that future code changes could require a retrofit.
"Probably by December of this year, the new NFPA standard on marijuana or facilities will probably be in place, if it passes through legislation and that sort of thing," the fire representative said, and warned that mandatory sprinklers would likely be a substantial expense. Board members said they wanted the applicant to be aware of the potential risk when planning longer-term investments in the site.
